Africa Dialogue on Financing to End Tuberculosis

Tuberculosis (TB) remains a significant public health challenge across Africa, despite
notable progress in recent years. Between 2015 and 2022, TB incidence was
reduced by 19%, while TB-related deaths decreased by 18%. Additionally, seven
high TB-burden African countries reached the incidence milestone of the End TB
Strategy.

However, Africa is still significantly off track in achieving the End TB Strategy and
United Nations High-Level Meeting (UNHLM) TB targets. Out of the 30 countries with
the highest TB mortality rates, 24 are in Africa. In 2022, 2.5 million people contracted
TB in the African region, but only 1.7 million had access to care, leaving
approximately 800,000 individuals undiagnosed and untreated.

Urgent action is required to address these gaps and ensure that no one is left behind
without access to TB diagnosis, treatment, and prevention.
In response, the Stop TB Partnership, in collaboration with Nigeria’s Federal Ministry
of Health and the African Union (AU) Commission department of Health and
Humanitarian Affairs, organized a high-level meeting focused on developing
financing strategies to end TB in Africa. This meeting gather Ministers of Health
from high TB-burden countries in Africa, as well as other key stakeholders, to
accelerate efforts toward achieving the UNHLM targets.
Overall Objective was to advocate for increased domestic financing for TB, raise high-level awareness, and develop concrete strategies to scale up efforts to meet the UNHLM targets for TB elimination in Africa.
